MASOOR DAL

Find the unique story behind this product

Masoor dal or Red Lentil is an important part of the diet in many parts of the world, especially in the Indian subcontinent which has a large vegetarian population. It is basically a whole lentil without skin on it and is red in color. It does not require soaking before cooking as it is very soft. With over 26 percent protein, this lentil has the highest level of protein, by weight, of any plant-based food after soybean and hemp.

We source Masoor dal from the farmers of Mokama, where these lentils are grown on the taal (lake). Mokama Taal is a perennial water system and exhibits enormous biodiversity.

Mokama is a town and a municipal council in Patna district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is located 90 km east of Patna on the southern banks of the river Ganges. Mokama has the 2nd highest amount of lentil production in India

Farmers here undertake extensive cultivation of pulses, including moong (green gram), masoor (red lentil) and chana (split chickpeas) in their silt-rich fields. Typically, the receding waters leave behind fertile soil and farmers would then sow their crops. This generally happens before October 15, and farmers would get good yields, without much need for fertilisers or water.
